information report

Calf

Have you heard about a calf? Well we must of all have, did you ever know we had different kinds of calves like baby cows are called a calf. A female calf is sometimes called a heifer calf and a male is called a bull calf. A heifer is a female that has not had any offspring.

Did you know that us humans have the same calf muscle as a calf? The calf muscle on the back of the lower leg is actually made up of two muscles. The gastrocnemius is the largest calf muscle forming the bump visible beneath the skin. The gastrocnemius has two parts or heads that create its diamond shape.

Cows or calves can live up to 18-22 years, a male cow weighs between 500 and 1000 kg and a female cow weighs between 850 and 1870 because they are pregnant, a calf weighs about 86 pounds. There are about three different types of cows in New Zealand, they are called the holstein-friesian, jersey cattle, and the kiwicross.

Holstein-Friesian are a breed of dairy cattle originating from Dutch of North Holland and they are known as the world’s highest production dairy animals. A female weighs about 580 kg and the height of a female is 1.5m.

Jersey cattle are a British breed of small dairy cattle. They are more open minded of heat than the larger breeds. With an average weight of 900 pounds, the Jersey produces more pounds of milk per pound of body weight than any other breed. Most Jerseys produce far too much of 13 times their body weight in milk.

Kiwicross weighs about 1,500 pounds; they were launched in 2005, they are the most popular breed in New Zealand and their height is 4 feet, 10 inches.

The cows in New Zealand produce milk about 2,500 gallons and 21,000 pounds and in a day they make about 8 gallons of milk. In 2002 there were about 3.3 million people drinking milk and that is only in New Zealand in New Zealand 13,900 dairy farmers produce over 13 billion litres of milk an average of about 4000 litres each.

Narrative

Steve and Bucky saves the day

One day a dinosaur called Steve wes was riding his bike when suddenly he heard someone say “hello my name is Bucky”. Steve pulled the brakes on the bike and looked around, he could see the treeline at the back of the farm and a group of cows that have calves then he noticed a calf walking straight towards him saying “help I can’t find my mum.” So Steve turned around, jumped on his bike and zoomed away back on the farm. When he got to the edge of the bush he turned around and noticed that Bucky was following him. Steve was trapped and he could not go home because Bucky was on the track, suddenly Bucky said “hi, I can’t find my mum but my name is Bucky”. Steve turned around and tried to find a way he could run but there was nowhere to go so he turned around and said “ I will have to take you back to the shed” so steve said wait here and I will go get the calf trailer but my hands are too small so I used my teeth to grab the trailer. When Steve got back Bucky was gone so he looked all around the paddocks where he was last seen and Bucky wasn’t there suddenly he heard muffled voices coming from down the bank so he walked to the edge and saw Bucky, Steve has just realised that Bucky was stuck on the ledge saying “help help I am stuck please someone help me” so Steve ran down the track and got Bucky to come up on the ledge when they got up on the bank Bucky said “sorry I thought I heard my mum down there then I slipped and got myself in a bit of a bad situation but you saved me”. So Bucky and Steve went back to the shed and became best friends but Steve is still wondering how Bucky can talk.

Now that is a story for another day

Popcorn

 How does popcorn pop?

Hey guys, do you smell that buttery popcorn going pop pop? Have you ever wondered how popcorn really pops? Well did you know in the 1880s there was a man called Charles Cretor that came up

with all this business, by inventing the first popcorn machine. The real question is, how is

popcorn really made?

Have you ever questioned how a kernel's life cycle takes place? It all began in Mexico. In 1948, Herbert Dick and Earle Smith discovered small heads of corn and popped kernels deep in a dry cave known

as the "Bat Cave”. The kernels have since been dated to be about 5,600 years old.

The reason why popcorn pops is the water trapped inside its kernel. If the kernel is heated to a high enough temperature, this water will transform into steam. Due to the hard and mostly airtight shell, the steam has nowhere to go, resulting in a buildup of pressure inside the kernel. A kernel has about

14-19% of water.

Why is popcorn healthy you may ask? Popcorn is a high fiber and whole grain snack which has a lower risk of heart disease, cancers and other health problems. A tub of movie theatre popcorn contains

around 1,090 calories.

In conclusion I hope you learned more about popcorn like how it was made and the science behind it.

How to look after a calf

How to look after a calf

Equipment

  • A calf

  • Milk feeder

  • Grass or paddock

  • A shade area

  • Water trough

  • Hay

  1. You have to go get your calf

  2. You get a calf bottle

  3. Get some milk

  4. Fill the bottle with milk all the way

  5. Not that full and close the lid

  6. Try to open the calf's mouth with your finger

  7. And feed it with the milk

  8. When you have done feeding your calf

  9. Then go home

  • You should feed your calf every day because they’re just little calf that are taken away from their parents. You will have to feed them anyway or they will be screaming their heads of (you have got to feed them)!!!!

  • You should always have grass or hay around them or in a paddock but you don’t need to because they already have grass in the paddocks when ever you go to feed your calf and when you have do that you should let them in the paddock to jump around and eat grass

  • Grass and milk is very important for the calf so they can grow up and produce milk to the butter, ice cream and yoghurt is the big one same as butter if you didn’t have milk what would you do then? Now that is a question for you to answer.

  • If you have a paddock put your calf in it and if you don’t want your calf to be alone put a couple of others caves in make sure that your calf has a tag on it do something on it that you will find out it is your calf like draw a flower or whatever brings out you and your calf.

  • You should always have a water trough around your calf so when it wants to have a drink it will go to the water trough cheek it twice or once a week.

  • Last and not least spend some amazing time with it if you want to do it every day you can but I can’t because I go to school the only time i can spend time with my calf is the weekends and the school holidays and just get to know each other.

How do you make Ice Cream

 How to make ice cream

Today we made ice cream. It was boys vs girls but the boys weren’t doing anything so the girls did half of their work. The ingredients we had were milk cream, food coloring, condensed milk and then we had the Electric mixers, wooden spoons, bowls, containers and a knife.

Firstly we put at least equally cream milk and used the electric mixer, we mixed it until it was creamy.

And then we add condensed milk equally and use a wooden spoon to flip it around until it is mixed.

We used three different kinds of food colouring like blue, green and red and we had to split it into different bowls and put the food colouring and flip it over and over.

And we used two containers and put the mixed cream in and used different colours.

And when we were done we used a knife and made lines and waves and then we put it in the freezer and we let it set.

Wearable Arts

31 of August we had our wearable arts show the whole school did it in cluding the teachers and teacher aides in groups of 2,3 or 4 and only some groups won and some didn't but every one tried and gave it a go thanks to everyone that joined in and had fun and thanks for the shared lunch and thanks for the parents that came and enjoyed the amazing day.

Reuse, Recycles, Reduce

Reuse
You can reuse materials in their original form instead of throwing them away, or pass those materials on to others who could use them too remember, “one man's trash is another man's treasure”. Here are some examples of reuse. Take along washable cups or travel mugs instead of disposables; a lot of restaurants and stores will be glad to fill or refill your own mug. When you do use disposables like plastic cups, plates, utensils, and plastic food storage bags, don't throw them away! Washing and reuse them most of them will last for a long time with many uses. They may not cost much to replace, but it doesn't make any more sense to throw away those things than it does to throw away your bicycle after one use.

Recycles
Recycles don’t just toss everything in the trash. Lots of things like cans, bottles, paper, and cardboard can be remade into either the same kind of thing or new products. Making new items from recycled ones also takes less energy and fewer resources than making products from brand new materials Just about anything in your home that cannot be reused can be recycled into something else. You'd be amazed what can be done with a recycled product! A recycled soda bottle can be made into T-shirts, combs, or hundreds of other plastic goods that can be used for many years. Even your brand new computer case might be made from ordinary recycled plastics. And paper products can take on different forms as well; an old phone book or coloring book might become one of your school books or a notebook.

Reduce
First and foremost, buy and use less! If all the other people on the Earth used as much stuff as we do in the United States, there would need to be three to five times more space just to hold and sustain everybody. So buy only what you need and use all of what you buy. Or make sure that when you are through with something, you pass it along to other people who can continue to put it to good use. This is especially important when it comes to things that can be dangerous to our environment, such as paint and chemicals.Start making wise package selections. Why is it important to consider how something is packaged when you consider what to buy? You can reduce waste by selecting products that are not wasteful in their packaging. Flashy and fun packaging costs more, usually adds little or no value to the product, and worst of all can do considerable harm to our environment by creating more waste or waste disposal difficulties.

Reminder of Childhood

Your childhood is a crucial part of growing up so why not keep
this teddy to remember all those good times! Who knows,
something that you learnt then could be helpful now.
One little teddy could make you remember the highlight of your life.
Last Teddy Bear

Why did you make me throw out all my teddies? Now I only have one
but you don’t think he’s special! The last one, the last teddy from our
ancestors and you just want to get rid of him. I’ve had him my whole life.
When I was born he sat beside me on my hospital bed, when I was a
toddler I used him for something to chew on, when I was five I brought
him to school on the first day to get me through it and now after all that

I still love him!

Writing Prompts:E

Your principal has decided to make the school day longer but ban homework.

Due to homework and trying to fit in with other after school activities, many boys and girls don't get the necessary amount of sleep.

Harris Cooper tries to argue that homework has a positive effect on students, but his studies also found no direct all between increased homework for students and improved test scores.
That's why we should have homework.
